OF SNOW
by Scarlett Olsen
Everyone you know is standing
in a tunnel with three ways out
And you are close enough to touch the faces
of everyone you know This deliverance
puts itself in your hands and
the man behind you taps you
on the shoulder and tells you this:
When winter was warm in the Arizona
land he was angry with the sun, because
his son had seen pictures
Of snow
At school and talked about it until winter came
around and the snow never came, but one morning
He woke up and his son had caught the cold
and they sat outside in the seventy degree day
for a moment and he told his son to tilt his
head up towards the sky and look, because it was
snowing.
They both laughed, but his son looked up
Towards the sky
And he could see the snow
There are three ways out
The woman next to you asks you:
“Do you believe me about the warm weather? Do you
believe me about my father drinking a glass of milk
and then going for a bike ride? Do you believe me
about the earrings I buried in the backyard?
Do you believe me about life being beautiful?”
You are standing in a tunnel with three ways out
And you look around at everyone you know
